Coming of Age Ceremony

Ghillie has heard plenty of tales about the Depths of the Posian Trench as a child, which has resulted in his creative mind creating images that he yearned to discover if they were real or not. He did not hesitate when the time finally came for him to tackle the task of descending into the darkest pits of the Trench. He was eager to see if the tales were true, and there was no Elder or other higher being that could stop him.

From the moment he left the Dome, he could feel the pressure of the water gnawing at his skin, muscles and bones, and the coldness of it proved to be a curse that was inflicted upon him as he descended further into the abyss. The soft, safe light of the Dome became more and more distant as he swam, the darkness engulfing his body and soul as he swam straight down, using his senses to guide him. His crimson red halo provided light that was for nought, as it was faint, as a dream of a child. It existed, but its presence did not bring comfort or fear. Perhaps if his magic was any stronger, it would have been more useful to him. But alas, he had to make do with what he had - his ears.

He swam for what felt like hours, but in reality, it was probably just thirty or so minutes. He struggled against the void and the current, the cold now seeping into his bones and eating him from the inside out, but he was determined. He came this far in the darkness; surely, he would soon find what he was looking for... and so he did.

Just when he was about to lose hope, a faint, luminescent light caught his attention in the distance. It was like the firey beacon of a watchtower, beckoning the strayed-away souls like him to approach, and suddenly, all the tiredness that he felt was no more. With revitalized strength, his muscles awoke, and he picked up the pace. As he did, the single beacon suddenly became many, and eventually, he found himself at the bottom, surrounded by a world that he could not believe existed.

Colourful plants danced around him with the underwater currents, their bioluminescent lights showing him colours that he never knew of. All different shapes and sizes, they were making a forest of themselves... nay, a jungle, which many creatures called themselves a home. Ghillie's curiosity got the better of him as he swam closer to what appeared to be sponges of an orange hue, which had tentacles to feel the water around them. He lifted his index finger and gently poked the creature, only to realize that the sponge was now holding onto him with its feelers, giving him a tingling sensation as the tiniest of hooks held his finger in place. The urge to take his finger away was strong, but he resisted and waited. If the plant was poisoning him, he would surely feel its effect, but if anything, the tingling sensation faded, and soon enough, he was let go. And to his surprise, the plant changed colours in an instant, displaying his deep red magic now.

"Incredible", Ghillie thought to himself as he swam around the sponge, wondering if this thing mimicked his magic on purpose or if it was just a mere accident, a trick of the light. Before he could dwell deeper into this train of thought, however, he felt a weird sensation at the very top of his tail. He whipped his tail around in his body, showing the very tip of it in front of his eyes with a curved spine, only to find himself face to face with the tiniest octopus that he had ever seen in his life. Not only was it tiny, it was translucent as well, letting a rexal take a peek at its glowing innards with no shame. The octopus suckled on the rex's tail, its break-breaking skin, despite its size, to suckle on the blood of Ghillie with hunger. Ghillie raised his metaphorical eyebrow as he decided to observe the bloodsucking despite his mind telling him not to.

He watched as the misty, magical-infused fluid filled the translucent body up until it was completely coloured by it, and he observed in awe as the octopus became larger and larger, as if it was the bottom of a mosquito. "Perhaps this is what this creature is..." he thought to himself with foul humour. "A deep-sea mosquito", he snickered as he watched the creature suddenly pop off of his tail and swim away, clearly struggling with how full it was.

The way how everything interacted with him gave the impression that everything deep down here was starving, despite what the environment surrounding him would notion. The endless waves of sponges, corals and plants were clearly thriving, but the animals looked positively tired. They moved slow and steady; he could only assume that whatever they were eating was probably rare - just like a presence like his.

He braced himself to continue his investigations of this hidden landscape further; however, that certain feeling behind his nostril tugged at his heart, calling him back to the Dome. His magic was fainting, slowly but surely, and he could feel his long quiver as signs of running out of oxygen were becoming more apparent. He sighed to himself as he took one last good of the corals around him before he began his ascent, trying to dig out from the back of his mind which way he came. He would come back one day to explore this area further; he was sure of it, but for now, he had to make do with what he had witnessed. Not that he had anything to complain about. He was sure that the so-called "Underworld" would be his target once more after he mastered his diving magic further.
