Our breeding system is a little different than other ARPGs!

In Rexalia the offspring's markings can be selectively inherited from the genes of the parents. Additionally, there is always a chance for a random magic color or gene to appear, even if it occurs nowhere in the lineage. These are called mutations.

Mutations may take the form of traits, which result in physical changes to your Rexal. These traits - while they look pretty - are cosmetic changes only.

Breeding Requirements

Breeding is not available at all times. There are a few requirements before you are able to get started!

  1. The rexals you wish to breed must have completed their Coming Of Age Ceremony.
  2. The player must have an available breeding ticket.
  3. All breedings will result in a single egg.
  4. Inbreeding is strictly prohibited. The roller will let you know if this occurs!
  5. As Rexals do not have biological sex, any rex can breed with any other one as long as inbreeding does not occur.
  6. As of May 2025, split breedings have been sunset, and are no longer possible.

Before breeding, please check out the breeding rules on our group rules page!

How To Submit A Breeding

Breeding are submitted onsite through the Breeding Page!

  1. Click the dropdowns to find the two Rexals you would like to breed together!
    • If you do not own these Rexals, click the "Use Slot instead?" box and it will allow you to choose from slots you own!
  2. Click any items you would like to use on your breeding! You must have these items in your Chest in order for them to be used!
  3. If you are submitting a Courtship:
    • Type out the #MPLOG-ID for the Courtship you would like to use! It must be submitted and approved in order to be used!
  4. Click the Breed button!

Mana is the "currency" of the new Rexalia breeding system. Mana works similarly to Semi-Custom points, but for your breedings. Each egg will be supplied with a base amount of mana that will allow you to choose your marking within the mana cost.

Additionally, you can increase your mana through use of breeding items. You may also make your rex sterile to add more mana. Warning though - they will be unable to breed, and this is an irreversible change!

Mana Costs

All rexal eggs start with a base of 8 mana!

Markings
  • Common Markings: 1 Mana
  • Uncommon Markings: 3 Mana
  • Rare Markings: 5 Mana
  • Very Rare Markings: 11 Mana (Only inheritable by sterile Rexals)
Traits
  • Common Traits: 2 Mana
  • Uncommon Traits: 4 Mana
  • Rare Traits: 7 Mana
  • Very Rare Traits: 12 Mana (Only inheritable by sterile Rexals)

Legendary markings may not be passed down, but they can randomly mutate.

How do Mutations work with this new system?

Mutations can happen at any point (though the chance is increased by a Glittering Vial) and are always free! They will cost you 0 mana.

How to select the markings of your geno
  1. After completing your breed you will be redirected to a page to view your egg.
  2. Click the "Marks/Traits" tab. You should see a list of available markings from your parents.
  3. At the top you should see a 0/X Mana Used key. Select the desired markings/traits until you've used your mana.
  4. Select "Generate" and done!
  5. Additionally, for those who love the randomness of breeding, we haven't left you stranded! Click the "Randomize" option to get a random preset from the pool of markings. Warning this will use the egg!
Love Stew

Gives an additional +1 mana.

Loutrophoros

Gives an additional +1 mana. (NOTE: This item does not stack with courtship bonuses)

Banana Fritters

Allows the player to choose a magic color to inherit from the parent.

Glittering Vial

Increases the chance for random mutations.

Item usages

Items must be selected in the form when submitting your breeding request. Items cannot be retroactively used after your breeding request is rolled, so please remember to use any desired items! Items must also be in your inventory at the time of usage, if it is not available in your inventory, it cannot be applied.

Obtaining Slots

Slots may be traded, sold or gifted to other players. If you wish to obtain slots there are few ways to do so:

  • Receive a slot from another player - Players are free to exchange their slots for many forms of payment. A great place to look is our discord or the marketplace!
  • Receive a slot from an event - Rexalia hosts events frequently. Many events include the chance to receive a slot to an NPC or to a Mysterious Stranger.
  • Purchase a slot in a sale - Once in a blue moon, the Duchess sails to the shore and allows those worthy to pick through her bounty. NPC and Mysterious Stranger slots are also sold here!

Slot Rules

Slots come with various rules that are dependent on how the slot permission form was filled out. These are as follows:

  • Allowing or disallowing romantic courtships, as some players may not be comfortable with romantic depictions of their characters.
  • If the slot can be resold, traded or gifted.

Please be aware of what the rules are to a slot and ensure you are okay with them before purchasing/trading. If a player is found to be breaking a rule for their slot - their breeding WILL be rejected.

COURTSHIP SUBMISSIONS

Please remember that you do not need a courtship when using an NPC or Elder breeding.

  • Remember - courtships are entirely optional!
  • Courtship submissions now provide +1 Mana.
  • Courtship submissions MUST be submitted and approved as an MP card prior to breeding.
  • Courtship MP bonuses will be applied once the breeding is posted.
  • NEW: Courtships are now asked to be neutral/platonic unless both slot permissions allow romantic depiction.
  • Each courtship submission may only be used once - there will be repercussions if a user is found to be reusing courtship submissions for multiple breedings.

Courtship Submission Rules

Artwork
  • Rex must always be clearly visible and the focal point of the image.
  • At least 3 body sections (the 'headshot' being mandatory) must be visible of each rex.
  • Both rexals participating in the breeding must be in the image.
  • Participating Rexals must be interacting in some way.
  • Images must be colored.
  • Collaborations are allowed but must be clearly labeled who did which part and/or what was done by each party.
  • Each Rex must be at least 150 pixels wide or tall, and must be identifiable by color/markings, and each image should be at least 500x500 pixels.
Literature
  • Both rexals participating in the breeding must be a central character in and throughout your story.
  • Participating rexals must be interacting throughout the story. While they may do independent things (such as walking away for a moment and returning, for example), they should not each have their own plotline. Furthermore, the writing should focus on the rexals (ie, not writing about the scenery for 75% of the word count).
  • Roleplay is allowed. However, each post must be clearly labeled with who has written it and it may be submitted to the galleria only once.
  • Collaborations within literature that are written and presented as seamless stories are allowed as well, but must also be clearly labeled who did which part and/or what was done by each party.
  • Literature should be at least 300 words.

Breeding Mechanics

How do Halo/Magic colors work?

Halos & Magic follow the HSL color model. Magic colors are constructed like:

hsl(COLOR_ID, 90%, 70%) - The two secondary values are always 90% and 70%! This ensures that all rex have the same saturation and lightness to their magic. Halo colors are always a mix of parents (unless there is a mutation)!

For example we have these two parent colors: Rex 1 - #f76e64 & Rex 2 - #6e8ef7
The resulting color will take the shortest path between the parents!

Examples of Accurate Colors for this Range

  • #AF64F7
  • #F7647F
Are there other halo colors?

There are! Some color modifiers will affect the magic of your rex, as well. For example Nox is a modifier that will color all magic black. This doesn't mean that the actual magic hsl code is black, however. The rex will still have a normal magic color that they can pass down. This will be listed in their import information. However, on the actual import, the magic will be pitch black. For now there are only four color modifiers that affect the halo (Nox, Argent, Sanguine and Crystallos), but there might be more down the line!

What are mutations?

Random mutations can happen any time rex are bred, which means that sometimes markings, traits or magic colors that are not present in the Rexal's lineage will show up in a breeding! New markings and mutations are sometimes revealed this way, rather than announcing them when they are created.

What is the chance to get a random trait or gene?

There's a small chance to get a random trait or gene within any breeding. The chances of that are around 5%, so you might get lucky! These can be any genes available in the game, even legendary ones.

What are the chances to inherit the parents coat color? Does it help if both parents have the same coat color?

If both parents have the same coat color, the chances are very high that the baby will get that same coat color as well. Otherwise, the baby might get one of the coat colors of the parents (or the grandparents!). There is, however, a chance of neither coat color getting 'caught' by the roller. If that happens the baby will get a new color and that can even include one of the very rare coat colors!

What are Mysterious Stranger slots?

Occasionally, you might get your hands on a slot to a Mysterious Stranger! These slots, just as their name implies, are mysterious! The stranger's markings are randomly generated at the time of the breeding. However, they are guaranteed to have at least one marking from their listed rarity tier to pass down. They might also have traits! It's important to note that you cannot breed two mysterious strangers together - one rexal of the pairing must be either a player's or an NPC.

What are Breeding Tickets?

Breeding tickets are the amount of times you can breed per month! Automatically all players get 3 breeding tickets per month. You can see your remaining tickets at the top of the breeding page!
