Having gotten done with the rest of the four hours of guarding the flock of sheep, Ambrose had wandered his way quite far, his location now being quite near to the edges of the dome. Having admired the magic keeping all the rexals located in this underwater country alive, the pink armored rex ambled along, quietly thinking about what he would do when it was time to go back towards the market.
Listening to the bird calls and the music of his surroundings, Ambrose suddenly swiveled his head as he started to smell blood….and then the scream of pain was wrenched through the air. Bounding forwards, he headed towards the sudden ruckus, as pain screeches and growling wrecked the previous peaceful quiet.
Up ahead, trying to become invisible, was a small baby deer, their neck held in the maws of one a wolf. A wolf that he noticed was also injured, and Ambrose immediately recognized this wolf from the scent, as the leader of the the trio who had tried to get to the sheep earlier in the day. The rexal’s sudden appearance startled the wolf enough for them to drop the poor doe’s neck, but the leader stayed standing above the small animal, and the baby was too terrified to move.
Analyzing quickly, he could tell though there were bite marks around the neck they were not deep enough, no, the blood was coming from a broken leg. That wouldn’t heal well if it was not taken care of quickly. Roaring he did a full charge towards the wolf, who yelped and leaped away, lest the large predator knock them back into the tree. Skidding to a stop and twirling to stand on their hind legs a bit, Ambrose covered the baby with their tail gently, and then landed heavily on the ground, causing it to shake a bit, and bared his teeth at the wolf.
Sending another anger filled and ferocious roar at the wolf, sent the seemingly now lone wolf fleeing with its tail tucked. Unfortunately, even though there was no knowing that the two other wolves that had been with him earlier, Ambrose was unable to focus on that.
Reaching up with his head he tore off some of the leaves from the tree branches above, and then started chewing them viciously, while soothing the trembling baby doe with his tail. Running the end up and down the back of the deerling, he nudged the little one so they stuck their leg out, and grimaced at what had to be done.
The bone was sticking out, and needed to be set quickly. Keeping the now mushy stuff in his mouth, he laid his tail firmly on the flank, and then quickly took the leg between his paws and pressed quickly and solidly together, snapping the bone back into place, causing the baby to feint form the pain after squealing shrilly. Not wasting any time, he spat out the mash from his mouth into a palm, and then started applying the mess to the wound, making it so it would clot and not continue to bleed, causing the little one to bleed out. Waiting a minute, the rex sighed as the blood started to clot finally, and then gently licked the mess off, spitting it off to the side.
Finally, the armored one looked up, and scented the air, making sure no threat was imminent. Thankfully, all was quiet, the birds were back to singing, and there was no danger at the moment. Gently lifting the baby up, Ambrose hobbled with one paw holding the deer steady, towards the scent of a stream. Needing water to clean the rest of the hurriedly made poultice, he finally made it to the stream and his tail dipped in, and out, showing the baby with water. Once the leg was cleaned with little chance of infection unless it had already set in - which there was currently no sign of it - Ambrose looked and examined the rest fo the baby.
Thankfully, the neck wounds had clotted on their own. They would be highly uncomfortable and quite painful, but all was clear, the little one was not in danger of dying. Sighing at all the excitement happening today, Ambrose started the long journey back to the city, to get the doe looked at by a professional. Hobbling on three legs was not satisfactory, but it would have to doe for now. More importantly, as long as the doe was passed out, it would be easier. Signing, Ambrose quietly congratulated himself though. He saved the doe, everything was okay for now. Hopefully it would stay that way for the rest of the day.
