Carnifex (originally named Animus) is a no-nonsense rexal who, due to his lack of empathy, found himself pushed out of being a medic for those in more fortunate places and became an underground medical person for the criminals of the Posian Islands. He is far from gentle, but he is precise and forever calm, which has earned him quite a reputation. He is extremely knowledgeable but does not restrict himself by ethics - he does what he needs to do to get the job done, even if it's bloody. This attitude is what earned him his current name.

Other than being a doctor, he is also an expert torturer—another reason for his gruesome name. When he is not putting shady rexals together, he is taking them apart for money or for his own research to advance his medical studies. Because of this, most thieves, pirates, and assassins prefer to stay on his good side; if he is there for them, he can patch them up and they can, potentially, "provide him with specimens". To him, the body is a machine like any other mechanism; the only difference is the brain that sits within the skull, which creates the spirit within.

It's probably not surprising that he enjoys dark humor. He finds it to be the window of one's own existence and fears and believes that only those who embrace it can truly enjoy life. While he does not look like it at first, he is smart and is painfully aware of that. He does not take kindly to others questioning his abilities or his intelligence.

Most disturbingly, he can very easily put on a gentleman's facade if the need arises —for those who do not know better, he is a friendly neighbour who likes going on nightly walks, but those who walk among the shadows know better.
